Tonight in Parliament, Peter voted in favour of the reasoned amendment to the Border, Asylum, and Immigration Bill.
Peter decided to sign the Reasoned Amendment that would have halted the Bills progress.
While Peter strongly supports the need for tougher border controls and a more robust immigration system, he believes that the Government’s Bill will not achieve the desired impact of reducing the number of illegal migrant crossings of the English Channel. For him, a more comprehensive and targeted approach is necessary to ensure that the policy has the desired impact.
One of Peter’s key concerns with the Bill is its failure to include a sufficient deterrent. He believes that without a robust deterrent framework, the legislation will not be as effective in preventing illegal crossings and will fail to dissuade migrants from attempting to reach the UK. This lack of a strong deterrent is a critical flaw that Peter feels needs to be addressed for the Bill to be truly effective in achieving its stated goals.
Additionally, Peter has concerns regarding the influence of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) on UK immigration policy. He believes there should be an open conversation about the UK’s membership in the ECHR and its influence over domestic law. Peter argues that the legal impact of left-leaning lawyers unduly affects the UK's ability to enforce stronger immigration controls.
He is committed to continuing the fight for reduced illegal immigration, particularly in Mid-Leicestershire, where the issue is of paramount importance.
